Lodger by Day, Student by Night

The trials and Tribulations of Studying and Working Full-time

Amy, one of our Account Managers, provides an inside look at how she navigates the challenges of balancing her professional commitments with her evening studies.

Hi, I’m Amy.

Overachiever, ambitious, driven, stressed!

Last year I decided to take on the challenge of completing a Masters degree. The only catch was I didn’t want to give up working full-time at Hunterlodge. Now with 2 completed terms under my belt, I can say that it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

There’s no way to sugarcoat it, being a full-time employee and student is HARD work. I’ve never truly appreciated how many – or how little – hours are in one day when my schedule is packed with work, commuting, lectures and studying. Not to mention spending any other time with family or friends, or to simply sit in a dark room and decompress after a hectic week.

Sacrifices have needed to be made to make this work, namely to my social life and sanity, but I honestly wouldn’t change a thing. By night I’m growing my metaphorical marketing toolbox ready to tackle client briefs by day and the feeling I get from being able to directly apply the knowledge learned from the degree to my client work hasn’t yet lost its novelty.

Completing my MSc Marketing with Birkbeck University of London has also provided me some unique opportunities too. I’ve been able to add some extra flair to creative assets needed for campaigns by being an agile student-come-marketeer. Authenticity became much more than a marketing buzz word when I was able to create content as a student for our most recent Birkbeck recruitment campaign. Check out my video for a glimpse into my day/evening at Birkbeck University – from lectures to campus hangouts!

As I face the start of my third and final term one thing is for certain; I wouldn’t have been able to do any of this without the support from Hunterlodge. Across departments and teams every single person has made it logistically possible to work and study by being flexible with my availability, have encouraged me to keep going when I’ve inevitably had a moan and ultimately have been my biggest cheerleaders to celebrate my success with me.
