Lessons Learned as an Account Executive Apprentice

Olivia's shares some of her experiences so far...

“It’s all about the blend of hands-on experience and mentorship that an apprenticeship provides.”

Being an apprentice at Hunterlodge has taught me so many things. Whilst most of my peers were heading off to university, I decided to dive straight into the world of work at just 18 years old. Now, at 20, and with over a year of experience under my belt, I’ve learned some invaluable lessons along the way…

1. Dive in at the deep end.

One of the most exciting aspects of my apprenticeship has been the immediate immersion into a dynamic and fast-paced environment. From day one I found myself in the midst of client meetings, brainstorming sessions, and tight deadlines. This experience has taught me adaptability and resilience in ways that no textbook ever could. Learning to think on my feet and thrive under pressure has become second nature to me, skills that are absolutely crucial in the constantly evolving world of advertising.

2. Embrace creativity.

The creative energy in this industry is truly infectious. I’ve had the incredible opportunity to witness first-hand the power of creativity in captivating audiences and delivering impactful messages for our clients. Working alongside talented designers, writers, and strategists, I’ve discovered that a career in creativity isn’t just about producing great work, it’s about expressing yourself and turning passion into purpose.

3. Listen to and absorb everything.

My apprenticeship has given me a front-row seat to the inner workings of client partnerships. Building trust, understanding needs, and delivering results are the foundation of successful collaborations. I’ve learned the importance of clear communication, active listening, and going above and beyond to exceed expectations. These skills are not only essential in advertising, but in any professional setting.

Now, you might be wondering why I chose the apprenticeship path over the traditional route of university. Well, for me, it’s all about the blend of hands-on experience and mentorship that an apprenticeship provides. While university offers valuable theoretical knowledge, my apprenticeship has given me practical, real-world skills that have set me apart in a competitive industry. Plus, I’ve had the privilege of learning directly from seasoned professionals right here at Hunterlodge.

As I approach the end of my apprenticeship, I’m excitedly looking forward to the next chapter of my career, carrying with me the invaluable lessons learned during my time as an advertising apprentice. It’s been a journey that may not have been conventional, but it has certainly been rewarding.
